Website Move
« Thread started on: Feb 6th, 2010, 05:38am »

Hopefully everyone's seen my note on the league website by now.

I've officially changed the website's hosting source and there's bound to be a few errors as a result. Please help me locate any problems. I've already gone through the website once before changing the hosting over and once after, but there are around 175,000-200,000 files on the entire website.

The transition may not be complete in-full for 72 hours (though it's already happened according to my viewing capabilities) which means some Fantasy NFL Playoffs entries or league signups may get logged in the old databases. If you notice something you've already submitted to the website isn't showing up anymore, please let me know [problem 0]. I already have one instance of it that I'll fix from my email log Saturday.
To make sure you're looking at the website on the new server, this page will exist: http://www.theasfl.com/asfl2/mpoll.html

Problem 1
The new server is case-sensitive where the old one wasn't. That means, "http://www.theasfl.com/asfl2/Members/Members.php" won't work, while "http://www.theasfl.com/asfl2/Members/members.php" will. I've fixed what I could find with that problem, but if you notice any link or bookmark jump that isn't working for that reason anymore, please post the page here.

Problem 2
I also had to change a line (or two for a few sections) of code on every page of the website to point to the new server. If you notice a page where the navigation isn't displaying correctly and everything is left align as a result, please let me know as well.

Problem 3
Along the same lines as problem two, I had to fix any code that called to a database on the old server so that it now points to the new server. If everything on a page displays correctly, but information on the page is blank- let me know it's this problem.

What good will come from this?

Well the cost will be halved monthly, give or take the new cost of renewing the domain name yearly and whatever else I haven't discovered in that regard yet (I'll likely change the domain holder to another company toward the end of the month or whenever the website can be down for a few days).

Equally important, I have an unlimited number of databases to play with. On the old hosting server, I had a max of five and as a result that would have severely limited what I could do with building the fantasy games themselves on the website. Ultimately, I'll likely wind up re-formatting what I've already done, but that'll have to wait for another day.

Less important, I have an unlimited amount of webspace and bandwidth with no file count limit. Ultimately, the first two of the three wouldn't of been a problem for the foreseeable future, but still...it's nice to have.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, but I won't publicly give out the name of either hosting company for security reasons. If you're involved in a website and want a better deal or something along those lines, email me.

....and now I sleep.

edit: upon further review, I'm going to need to fix quite a few things on the ABL website because of the case-sensitivity tomorrow.

Not sure this is the right thread to post this....

On the Money League Baseball Draft site I've had repeated issues with redirecting. I open the draft page and get redirected to an advertiser.

Usually just closing the browser and opening a new session resolves the issue. But it's been getting progressively worse. Right now the redirect happens each time I open the draft page, even if I've closed all my IE sessions.

It wouldn't have anything to do with the website moving.

What's the redirection to?

I don't know if I'll be able to sort it out easily because I can't access the website of the ad network I use because of my own virus problems.

I was having the same issue when looking at the draft page on my iphone. It would almost fully load and then it would redirect me. I dont know what the ad was for cause i would never let it fully load. It doesnt happen all the time though. Will pay attention if it happens again though.

This is the link it just gave me. I hate that these engines know my zipcode. The heart failure part....that's a little scary.

http://www.whitepage.net/businesses/category:Heart+Failure/location:Alexandria,VA/listings.html

It seems like it consistently (as in the last 2 days) redirects me when I simply pass the mouse pointer across the ad at the top of the page. In the past it also redirected me if the page was already loaded and I just clicked the scroll bar on the right.

UPDATE: I tried again and it seems like it's just random.

Any (or every) webpage knows your location based on your IP...the ad isn't doing anything special...unless you're behind a proxy...then it might be.

Does it happen anywhere else on the website and what ad was actually displayed that you have to mouse over to cause the problems?

If this is only happening to the two of you it could be related to something already on your system.

Yeah I know the website figures out where I am based on my provider, but sometimes I feel like ads are influenced by websites I've visited. But maybe not.

I have not recently had the redirection problem. In any case it was never a big deal. I'll make another post if it becomes an issue.
