Basic Rules Every day you pick two MLB players, 1 pitcher and 1 hitter. Their stats accumulate in the traditional 5x5 roto categories: R, HR, RBI, SB and AVG for hitters and W, SV, K, ERA and WHIP for pitchers. Of course, there's a catch. You can only use a player once per month. If you select a player for any given day and his team plays a game (even if he doesn't participate) you cannot use him for the rest of the month.
Scoring Everyone's cumulative stats will be totaled and then the rotisserie standings will be determined based on your total for each stat relative to everyone else participating. In stick with ASFL2 tradition, low score = better. The highest total in a category gets you 1 point, second highest = 2 points, etc. Add up those scores through the 10 categories for your overall score.
The standings will be totaled over three periods- weekly, monthly and overall. The weekly winners will receive a bonus point a la many ASFL2 games, the monthly winners will earn a spot in the playoffs and the overall standings will be used as a means of bonus point earning on top of the playoff results.
Weeks will run from Monday to Sunday, aside from the first (Sunday to Sunday) and last (Monday to the following Monday) weeks of the season.
Minimums In order to prevent the rate stat standings from getting distorted by late or lazy entrants there will be minimums to be factored in.
The official MLB minimums are 3.1 PA/G and 1.0 IP/G or 502 PA and 162 IP for the year.
I'll keep the hitter minimum at 3.1 PA/G which translates into 22 PA per week, 93 PA per month and 456 PA for the whole season (doesn't include the playoffs).
Due to the fact that mostly starters will be used, 1.0 IP/G is too low for this games purpose each week or month. The weekly innings requirement will be 28 IP (or 4 per day). The monthly innings requirement will be 120 IP (also about 4 per day) and the yearly innings requirement will be 150 IP (more in line with the normal MLB minimum).
I should probably note PA = plate appearances = at-bats plus walks plus hit-by-pitches plus sacrifices.
Playoffs As I already mentioned, the 5 monthly winners (April, May, June, July and August) will qualify for the playoffs. They will be joined by the top 7 in the yearly-standings who didn't qualify by winning a month, for a total of 12 participants. The tiebreaker throughtout the playoffs will be regular season rank.
Round 1 (Tuesday, September 1st to Thursday, September 10th) The lower eight seeds will participate through the first 10 days of the month with the top 4 moving on to the semifinals.
Semifinals (Friday, September 11th to Sunday, September 20th) The semifinal round will have the four moving on from round one face the top four seeds from the regular season with the eight split into two groups of four.
Group 1 Top seed from regular season (-2 from total) Fourth seed from regular season Second lowest score from the opening round Higher regular season seed not-reseeded in opening round
Group 2 Second seed from regular season (-1 from total) Third seed from regular season Lowest score from opening round Lower regular season seed not-reseeded in opening round
The groups won't be separate in the roto scoring table, meaning the worst score anyone will get is 8, not 4. The group winners will be guaranteed a place in the championship round with the two lowest scores after them also moving on.
Championship (Monday, September 21st to Sunday, October 4th) Lower Group winner (-2 from total) *Second lowest scorer from semifinals (-1 from total) *Third lowest scorer from semifinals (-1 from total) *Highest advancing score from semifinals
*The lower group winner will be guaranteed at least one point off their total. If they finish fourth or worse overall in the semifinals, the third place finisher will be moved down and receive no benefits.
Those involved will still be held to the one pick per-player per-month rule. This will be an added bonus to those with byes as they have less days of the month to pick players and will have a larger pool to pick from compared to those without byes.
Submitting Your Picks In order to submit your pick for a day you simply need to reply in this format:
Batter(s): 4/5: Adam Dunn (Washington) 4/6: Ryan Howard (Philadelphia) 4/7: Jorge Cantu (Florida) 4/8: Chipper Jones (Atlanta) 4/9: Jose Reyes (New York Mets) 4/10: Ryan Theriot (Chicago Cubs) 4/11: Manny Ramirez (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Pitcher(s): 4/5: Felix Hernandez (Seattle) 4/6: Justin Duscherer (Oakland) 4/7: Frank Francisco (Texas) 4/8: Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels) 4/9: AJ Burnett (New York Yankees) 4/10: John Danks (Chicago White Sox) 4/11: Fausto Carmona (Cleveland)
I encourage you to make your picks weekly, but you're allowed to pick as far (or as little) in advance as you desire so long as there are at least 5 MLB games that haven't started at the time of your post for the day you are picking. You can also post your hitter picks separate from your pitcher picks, but you will only get stats for a day if you pick both a hitter and a pitcher on that day. Please make an effort to spell names correctly and correctly indentify teams.
If you have yet to make any picks for the coming week as of Saturday night and you aren't usually a daily picker you will be emailed a reminder for the week.
Rain-Outs/Postponed Games In the event that you pick a player who is scheduled to play on a day, but winds up having his game postponed you will be allowed to choose a game later in the month for that player's stats to count in. If the postponement happens on the last day of a month you will be allowed to change the player to a different player playing that day who's game has yet to start or I will use a random number generator to select a day in the month for his stats to count from. If I need to use the number generator I will make sure the team involved had a game that day and/or the starter pitched. If a player is making his debut for the month on the last day and his game is postponed you won't receive any stats for the player.
Doubleheaders If you pick a player who's team will take part in a double header for the day you select him you will need to pick one game from the double header to count for your player. If you fail to select a game it will be the second game by default, unless you're player was re-picked to play on the date when it will default to the first game.

I really enjoyed studying economics, way too much probably since I haven't really got much benefit from my Maters degree in my career, if it can be called that.
The one fundamental premise of economics that I always had a problem with is the assumption that people will always make rational decisions based on the information they have at the time to maximize their utility.
I had a lot of discussions with my teachers about what utility is. Obviously it is not just to make as much money as possible and everyone agrees about that but then how do you quantify it? How would anyone assign value to the time we spend here? How would we? The only proof that it has value to us is the fact that we spend time here. So the value is the alternative cost, i.e. the money we could have made if we had spent the time we spend here on trying to make money. I don't think we should be thinking about that...

Is this game part of the overall standings of the league or is it just for BP's?

So in order to get Saves we need to pick a closer and just hope he has a chance to get the save?

This is the escense (sp?) of why Utility and Futility are so hard to discerne (sp?).
